Mountain carting in Grindelwald
It was a cloudy and rainy day on our second day in the Swiss town Interlaken. I’d planned to go up to Grindelwald First and have a look at the view from the top of the mountain. But that wasn’t going to happen. The top of the mountain was covered in thick clouds. There was no point going up that high, but I still wanted a day trip into the mountains and we ended up taking the train from Wilderswil to Grindelwald. The views from the train were already stunning, as we slowly got higher up into the Alps. In Grindelwald we took some photos and asked at the information desk what our options for activities were. It was cold, but not raining yet, and so we took the gondola up to Schreckfeld and bought a ticket for the mountain carts. We were suddenly a lot higher and the temperature…
Aiming higher
Interlaken is a wonderful place in the Swiss Alps that I am lucky enough to visit regularly. This season I tried to explore the region a bit and try a different activity every time I was there. From Wilderswil I took the old Cogwheel train up to the Schynige Platte. The train is from 1893 and thus takes its time climbing up the steep mountain. And steep it is! At times I feel like I’m sitting in a roller coaster and they could let us go any minute, to experience a Swiss thrill ride. We stop at a mid station and then…
The perfect round trip
This summer I was lucky enough to be able to visit the Swiss alps twice. I fell in love, with the fresh air, the mountains, the activities… all of it. We were based in Interlaken, where a bunch of towns have all grown towards each other in between two big lakes and massive mountains. I’ve seen it in the rain, I’ve seen it in the sunshine. It’s pretty all the time and it makes me want to explore Switzerland more. On both occasions I took my group out to the town of Lauterbrunnen, slightly higher in the mountains, and only a 15 minute train ride away. From the train station we walked past the town and through the valley to the Trümmelbach falls. These waterfalls are not free to visit and have become quite the tourist attraction, with buses and loads of cars parked around the restaurant. It’s still worth…
