Sales talk

Sales talk
December 10, 2013 by andreaonderweg

“We are 100% Australian. Well, apart from me of course.” I haven’t even been in the city for a week and I’m already in an office for a sales training. Sales jobs are all around and can deliver a lot of travel money. That is, if you’re into it. Personally I’m a bit hesitant about sales jobs, but I decide to give it a try anyway.

This one is the least aggressive I could find; the milkman. It sounds fairly innocent and seems like a good service. They deliver aussie made products to your home. You’d think people would be open to that wouldn’t you?

Two days after the training I am in one of Adelaide’s suburbs. The houses are like castles, each with a big fence around it and only the intercom to get to whoever is inside. The only thing that’s missing is a water barrier to stop intruders from entering their pools and tennis courts. My job today is to get as many people as possible to join the service and to place their first order with me.

At first one of the supervisors joins me. The first hour we are knocking on doors but nobody opens. The area is deserted. Later I have to fight for myself in the wilderness of Adelaide’s suburbia. I come across houses where I have no idea how to open the gate to the front door. I guess a criminal career was never meant for me. On to the next house.

The next week we arrive in a different area of town. Here I am invited for coffee. Old and lonely people just want to talk to you, preferable all day. Still they don’t buy. I start producing my standard story. Even interested people don’t want to buy at the door. “Are you online?” “Uhm, yes…” And you’ve just lost another sale. Damn you internet age. Getting people enthusiastic isn’t my problem, but that won’t bring money into my account. Some people can make good money every week, but I only gain a few good conversations.

Where? Adelaide, but also available in other major cities
For how long? I only lasted 1,5 weeks, but some travel the country doing it
Funfactor? Depends on the neighbourhood
Money? commision only
Found at? gumtree
