The opening of the Foo Fighters tour down under was in Christchurch. The moment I saw they were coming to town I’d put my mind on getting tickets. I was starting to miss the European concerts and festivals. There are so many to choose from. And here… seeing a big band like the Foo Fighters here is almost exceptional. Bands don’t tend to travel to this part of the world often and there is definitely no festival circuit like in Europe. So yesterday it was finally time to go.
I arrived early enough to see the first band, that started playing just after 5PM. This concert was ridiculously early. So much so that Dave Grohl commented on it being light. “Normally I ask people to get their lighters, but there really isn’t a point, is there? I can see you all fine already.” It was indeed light throughout most of the concert. The first band, Miss June, only played a handful of songs, followed by Rise Against, one of my favorites. I didn’t really feel it though. It was as if the sound wasn’t optimal.
While we were waiting for the Foo Fighters crew to set up, people really started arriving. The Foos played an almost three-hour set, which was excellent! Trust them to comment on the city and flatter its inhabitants, with praise about rebuilding after the earthquake. The energy from band and crowd was really amazing. They played songs from their entire repertoire and included some Queen and some instrumental bits. In rock ‘n roll terms, it was totally fucking awesome!
Here are a few snaps from the night.
